But automation without structure doesn\u2019t create efficiency\u2014<strong>it creates chaos.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To all you fantasy football nerds<\/strong>&nbsp;out there\u2014you know that just&nbsp;<strong>drafting the highest-ranked players<\/strong>&nbsp;doesn\u2019t guarantee a winning season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you let the auto-draft bot pick your team, you might end up stacked with strong quarterbacks and no strong running backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or worse\u2014<strong>you\u2019ve got star players but no depth<\/strong>, leaving you scrambling when bye weeks hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mistake-1-pmax-runs-wild\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"mistake-1-pmax-runs-wild\"><\/span><strong>Mistake 1: PMax runs wild<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PMax is the same<\/strong>. Only the<strong>&nbsp;strongest performers succeed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google fixates on your best-sellers \u2013<strong>\u00a0they get all the budget.<\/strong>\u00a0Everything else? Ignored.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Longtail products disappear<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 New, niche, or high-margin items never get a chance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ROAS looks great,\u00a0<strong>but profits suffer<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 low-value products<strong>\u00a0eat your ad spend<\/strong>\u00a0while higher-margin ones are sidelined.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Imagine you run an outdoor gear store:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your\u00a0<strong>best-selling $10 hiking socks<\/strong>\u00a0dominate your PMax campaign because they\u00a0convert\u00a0easily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, your\u00a0<strong>$250 hiking boots<\/strong>\u2014which actually drive profit\u2014never see the ball.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Your ROAS looks fantastic, but your&nbsp;<strong>profit margins<\/strong>&nbsp;shrink,&nbsp;<strong>stock levels&nbsp;<\/strong>become misaligned, and your&nbsp;<strong>ad spend is stuck in a loop<\/strong>&nbsp;of low-value&nbsp;conversions.<br><br>Or in other words:&nbsp;<strong>PMax isn\u2019t playing to win<\/strong>. It\u2019s just trying to complete passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mistake-2-a-half-baked-strategy\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"mistake-2-a-half-baked-strategy\"><\/span><strong>Mistake 2: A half-baked strategy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, many retailers know well enough to avoid the trappings of mistake #1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, they<strong>&nbsp;attempt to introduce some structure<\/strong>&nbsp;by segmenting products<strong>&nbsp;based on a single attribute<\/strong>, like margins or past performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While definitely a better approach than a product free-for-all, this leads to a glaring issue that&nbsp;<strong>usually happens in one of two ways:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Segmenting by one attribute (e.g., margins)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You separate high-, mid-, and low-margin products,&nbsp;<strong>expecting bigger profits<\/strong>.
