Then we got &#8220;Performance Max for Search,&#8221; which morphed into &#8220;Search Max,&#8221; and then finally\u00a0<strong>&#8220;AI Max for Search.&#8221;<\/strong><br><br><strong>And now?\u00a0<\/strong>The AI Max layer (read: the PMax layer) is being slapped right back onto your Standard Shopping campaigns.<br><br>With more and more\u00a0<strong>PMax features<\/strong>\u00a0being introduced into the rest of Google&#8217;s ads-lineup, it\u00a0<strong>begs the question:\u00a0<\/strong>Where does this leave Performance Max?\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-feed-only-pmax-an-uncomfortable-truth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"feed-only-pmax-an-uncomfortable-truth\"><\/span><strong>Feed-Only PMax: An uncomfortable truth<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is one thing that should be said about AI Max for Shopping, it&#8217;s that it is Google&#8217;s attempt to fix a<strong>&nbsp;structural problem with feed-only PMax.<\/strong><br><br>For a long time, &#8220;Feed-Only PMax&#8221; campaigns were a tactical hack to introduce a&nbsp;<strong>much-needed control layer<\/strong>. By stripping out text, images, and video assets, retailers were able to force PMax to act like a supercharged Shopping campaign.<br><br><strong>However:<\/strong>&nbsp;Feed-Only PMax was never perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Algorithmic handicapping:<\/strong>\u00a0You essentially asked a complex machine learning model to operate with one hand tied behind its back, often resulting in performance plateaus.\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The scale ceiling:<\/strong>\u00a0Without creative assets, you miss out on upper-funnel discovery. You can harvest existing intent, but you struggle to create net-new demand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The &#8220;Heroes &amp; Zombies&#8221; trap:<\/strong>\u00a0Even with a pristine feed, PMax remains strategically blind. It&#8217;s a win-win that boosts relevance and CTR.\u00a0<em>But here\u2019s the catch:<\/em>\u00a0You cannot fake\u00a0<strong>Data Density<\/strong>. If your feed is messy, your AI-generated copy will be garbage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u200b\u200b\u200b<strong>The trojan horse (Final URL Expansion):<\/strong>\u00a0Google takes the wheel by dynamically selecting landing pages based on what the AI\u00a0<em>assumes<\/em>\u00a0is the user&#8217;s intent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The format hijack (Format Selection):<\/strong>\u00a0This is the functional layer that executes URL expansion. If the AI decides a category page is more relevant than a product page, it will serve a\u00a0<em>text ad<\/em>\u00a0instead of a\u00a0<em>Shopping ad<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In other words:&nbsp;<\/strong>Your Shopping campaign is now also a Search campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-who-is-this-actually-for\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"who-is-this-actually-for\"><\/span><strong>Who is this <em>actually<\/em> for?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google is effectively blurring the lines even further between campaign types that now fundamentally do&nbsp;<strong>pretty much the same thing&nbsp;<\/strong>in slightly different ways.<br><br><strong>Is this a good thing?<\/strong><br><br>To be frank: We don&#8217;t know \u2026 yet.<br><br>The theoretical advantage here is catching keywordless traffic you might have otherwise left on the table.<br><br>But in the age of&nbsp;<strong>Broad Match Search&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>full-suite PMax campaigns<\/strong>, those queries are likely&nbsp;<strong>already covered.&nbsp;<\/strong>Google is simply&nbsp;<strong>increasing the overlap<\/strong>&nbsp;and redundancy within their campaign stack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the moment, this feature-release feels more like\u00a0<strong>a defeated acknowledgement\u00a0<\/strong>that there will always be a small percentage of advertisers who will never transition over to PMax.<br><br>So who is this exciting for? If you only use standard Shopping and Exact Match Search, this is a massive upgrade. The upside-to-risk ratio is the strongest of the three features and the easiest to attribute.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hold Final URL expansion and Format Selection back<\/strong>\u00a0until you&#8217;ve mapped the overlap. Before turning either on, write down where the new Search-style traffic would actually land, and which existing campaign would lose attribution to it. If you can&#8217;t answer that on one page, you&#8217;re not ready to enable them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Audit your campaign overlap<\/strong>\u00a0before any rollout. If you already run PMax, broad match Search, and DSAs, the harder question isn&#8217;t &#8220;will AI Max for Shopping add revenue?&#8221; It&#8217;s &#8220;where would it add incremental revenue, and where would it just cannibalize another campaign in the same account?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Treat defaults as a starting point, not a recommendation.<\/strong>\u00a0Google&#8217;s stack is converging. Default-on settings will increasingly favor platform reach over advertiser control.
