And they were right not to want it.<br><br>Google was asking them to hand over payment logic, order management, and first-party customer data in exchange for distribution they already had. The value exchange was broken.\u00a0<br><br><strong>So why is UCP different?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-transaction-logic-stays-with-you\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%e2%80%8b%e2%80%8b%e2%80%8b%e2%80%8b%e2%80%8b%e2%80%8bthe-transaction-logic-stays-with-you\"><\/span>\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<strong>The transaction logic stays with you<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your payment gateway. Your order flow. Your customer&#8217;s email address.&nbsp;<strong>All still yours.<\/strong><br><br>Google brings the surface. You keep the infrastructure. That was the dealbreaker in 2018, and UCP removes it.<br><br>But here&#8217;s the part most retailers are missing:<br><br><strong>Google now has leverage it didn&#8217;t have in 2018. Which is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They control how often a search escalates into AI Mode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They decide how visible your products are when an AI agent is assembling a multi-item cart.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And their shopping graph \u2014 built from years of Merchant Center data, layered onto Google&#8217;s audience graph \u2014 gets stronger every time a UCP transaction completes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the checkout itself runs through&nbsp;<strong>Google Pay<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Google Wallet&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014 a deliberate lock-in move that gets harder to exit with every transaction.<br><br>Competitors&nbsp;<strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong>&nbsp;have this.<br><br>\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200bOpenAI doesn&#8217;t have a shopping graph.<br><br>Walmart had to embed a chatbot (Sparky) inside ChatGPT just to maintain first-party data and loyalty pricing \u2014 because there&#8217;s no UCP equivalent there.<br><br>That contrast tells you everything about the structural advantage Google has built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-and-it-s-already-progressing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"and-its-already-progressing\"><\/span><strong>And it&#8217;s already progressing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three core UCP capabilities are now live and progressing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Cart building<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 multi-item from multiple different retailers, across Google surfaces including AI Mode, YouTube, and Gmail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2.&nbsp;<strong>Catalog capability<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 product variants, real-time inventory, live pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3.&nbsp;<strong>Identity linking<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 logged-in Google users automatically get your loyalty and member pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">smec\u2019s Head of Ecommerce Insights, Mike Ryan,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v0lVD_tJJh8&amp;t=636s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called this<\/a>\u00a0<strong>&#8220;<em>the logical endpoint of headless commerce.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&nbsp;<strong>is not replacing<\/strong>&nbsp;your checkout. They&#8217;re becoming the&nbsp;<strong>discovery and intent layer above<\/strong>&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-if-your-feed-isn-t-configured-for-this-you-re-not-in-the-cart\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"if-your-feed-isnt-configured-for-this-youre-not-in-the-cart\"><\/span><strong>If your feed isn&#8217;t configured for this, you&#8217;re not in the cart<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, a messy feed meant&nbsp;<strong>inefficient spend.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2026, a messy feed means you might not qualify for the auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brands that act now \u2014 getting the right Merchant Center attributes, feed flags, and campaign structures in place \u2014 will have a compounding advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ones that wait won&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding the shift is step one.
