Anonymizing a user\u2019s IP address in the Google Analytics tracking code is one of the most important steps you need to take towards becoming GDPR-compliant.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"schema-how-to wp-block-yoast-how-to-block\"><p class=\"schema-how-to-description\"><\/p> <ol class=\"schema-how-to-steps headline2\"><li class=\"schema-how-to-step\" id=\"how-to-step-1582719778872\"><strong class=\"schema-how-to-step-name\">Anonymizing IP addresses in Google Analytics<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-how-to-step-text\">The tracking code that has been considered standard until now does not fulfill all new data protection requirements. That\u2019s why an additional code snippet has to be added to the already implemented Standard Google Analytics Code (both for Universal Analytics Code and gtag.js). <br\/><br\/><strong>Universal code:<\/strong><br\/><br\/><code>ga('create', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-X', 'auto');<\/code><br\/><code><strong>ga('set', 'anonymizeIp', true); <\/strong><\/code><br\/><code>ga('send', 'pageview');<\/code><br\/><br\/> <strong>gtag.js code:<br\/><\/strong><br\/> <code>gtag('config', '&lt;GA_TRACKING_ID>', { 'anonymize_ip': true });<\/code><br\/> <br\/>This function, defined in Google\u2019s internal JavaScript library, will delete the last 8 bit of an IPv4 address <em>before<\/em> Google processes it further, effectively anonymizing the address (e.g. 8.8.8.8 will turn into 8.8.8.0.)<br\/><br\/>This happens while the request is still in memory, so Google will neither store nor process complete IP addresses at any given time.<\/p> <\/li><li class=\"schema-how-to-step\" id=\"how-to-step-1582721015432\"><strong class=\"schema-how-to-step-name\">Double-checking IP anonymization<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-how-to-step-text\">It\u2019s always safest to double-check whether the implementation has been successful: you can check it via Chrome Console or Firebug in Firefox.
